Okay so this is re post of someone else's blog. I know borderline plagiarism ... oh wait forget the borderline it is plagiarism. Except I am not claiming I wrote these words, and this is not my story but what she says is exactly how it is.
How to support a couple who is hoping to adopt...
by Rach (fyi on Rach and Ry blog)
As I write this, I realize that many of the ways that you can support an adoptive couple are similar to the ways that you can support a birthmom. Tell them that you love them. Tell them that they are strong and that you admire them. You don’t need to tell them that “it’s all in the Lord’s hands” or “it will happen when it’s supposed to.” They already know that. A year ago, I was at a church activity, and one of the ladies asked me how the adoption process was going. I said, “We are approved and just waiting to get picked by a birthmom.” She said, “It will happen when it’s supposed to. You just need to learn to be patient.” Ouch. What a sting to the heart. Fortunately, one of my best friends, Laney, overheard this comment, put her arm around me, and said, “Rachel has been patient. I think her patience is really amazing, actually.” I can’t tell you how much her support meant to me in that moment.
When a couple who desperately wants children is hurting, don’t try to fix it. Don’t give a little sermon on God’s timing. Just say, “I’m so sorry,” “I love you,” “You are going to be awesome parents,” or “I pray for you every night.” In some of my darkest moments, knowing that dozens of people around the country were praying for us truly sustained me. I remember saying to Ryan, “Even if God isn’t hearing my prayers, I know He’s hearing my grandma’s!” (That woman is a saint.)
Show them that you care. Send a card, bring flowers, drop by with dessert. Don’t pretend that their trial isn’t happening. In a private setting, when the moment is right, ask them if they are comfortable talking about their struggle. I think, in general, women need to talk.
Oh how often I've wanted to say that. I know everything is in the Lords Hands so I don't find it blasphemous when I heave a sigh during yet another lesson on the Lords Will or shutter when someone tells me that, "it will happen when it's suppose to."
Like Rach, it's the prayers that sustain us. Knowing we have so many people praying for us. Hearing every time our name is put in the temple, literally gives me chills. We've had our name in so many temples at the same time across America, once even in Canada, that it baffles me that the Lord hasn't already dropped seven kids on our doorstep just to get our loved ones to tone down the praying a bit.
The family support is brilliant. And prayers are perfect. So even if this little boy doesn't end up coming to our home, we will be alright, we will be okay. Just tell us that you love us, remind us how strong we are and continue praying.
